Former Associated Students presidential candidate Jim Bretney was arrested on charges of reckless driving Wednesday night, shortly after finding out he lost the ASUA primary election.

University police officers reported seeing Bretney turn left onto East Sixth Street from North Park Avenue with the tires of his 1981 Chevrolet pickup squealing.

Bretney then drove down Sixth Street and allegedly swerved into the center lane, heading directly for four pedestrians who were crossing the street. The four ran safely to the north sidewalk, police reports stated.

Officers estimated Bretney was traveling at least 50 mph while on Sixth Street.

When stopped, Bretney initially refused to identify himself and even after giving officers his driver license, refused to answer questions, police reports stated.

The reports indicate Bretney apologized shortly thereafter, saying, "I was pissed off because I just lost the student election."

Reckless driving is a class 2 misdemeanor punishable by fines or up to six months in jail, said Sgt. Sal Celi of the University of Arizona Police Department.

Bretney was cited and released at the scene. He could not be reached for comment yesterday.
