Editor:
This is in response to the March 22 letter from James Van Olphen ('Fling' not unholy, time for family, fun). He said, "Who gives a rat's ass when the Spring Fling is, as long as they have good rides and better food!" Apparently, not Mr. Van Olphen.
Sure, there is no passage in the bible regarding having fun during Holy Week, but there is a commandment that says "Remember to keep holy the Sabbath," and there is no holier Sabbath than Easter Sunday for all Christians. Also, Passover, the holiest time for Jewish people, begins April 4. I'm surprised that the Newman Center and the Jewish community haven't commented on this. Or is the university more powerful than God? Even some area residents find the timing offensive and have written to the Wildcat about it. I'm appalled to read that Mr. Van Olphen couldn't care less about the Passover or the resurrection. Maybe he needs to find God and listen to Him. He may be surprised at what he hears.
I urge everyone to think twice and perhaps boycott the Spring Fling this year. It's bad enough that people who perhaps are lax in their faith are now calling others to join them in fun and games during this most solemn season. I am not against having fun, but I cannot help feeling that the university showed consummate gall in planning this year's Fling. What will they do next?
If the secular world can honor people's religious beliefs, then perhaps the university should reconsider its position. I pray that they will.
