LOS ANGELES -''The Birdcage'' was the nation's top movie choice for the fourth straight weekend, bringing in $10.1 million to hold off three newcomers in wide release.

Only four 1995 movies topped the charts for four straight weekends: ''Legends of the Fall,'' ''Apollo 13,'' ''Seven'' and ''Toy Story.'' The contemporary chart-leading record is held by 1990's ''Home Alone,'' which finished first for seven consecutive weekends.

''Sgt. Bilko,'' starring Steve Martin, finished best of the new films, taking second place with $8.1 million. The re-issue of ''Oliver & Company'' claimed fourth with $4.5 million, while another animated movie, ''All Dogs Go to Heaven 2,'' fared poorly, taking in $2.3 million to finish ninth.

In limited release in 1,134 locations, James Earl Jones and Robert Duvall's ''A Family Thing'' was sixth with $3 million. ''Girl 6'' faltered in its second weekend, slipping 60 percent to 14th with $1 million. ''Flirting With Disaster'' was 18th, earning $706,000 in just 70 locations.
