Council boycotts Fling for Holy Week

Editor:

As public relations chairperson for the Newman Center Student Council, I felt I must respond to Mark Golembiewski's letter ("Breaking the Sabbath call for Fling boycott") dated April 2.

Our student council unanimously decided last year, we would not participate in Spring Fling if it was held during Holy Week. It was not a decision to boycott Spring Fling; we just opted not to participate as a group.

It is unfortunate that this event falls during such a holy time. Our chaplains, as well as those from Hillel and the Campus Christian Center, met with several people, including the chairperson of Spring Fling, last year to see if Spring Fling could be moved. As you can see, that did not occur. But hopefully, in the future, the planners of Spring Fling will examine their calendars more closely to ensure that the carnival can be enjoyed by the university community as a whole.
