Arizona assistant basketball coach Jessie Evans has been mentioned as a favorite for the head coaching position at Long Beach State.

Seth Greenberg, who has been the 49ers' head coach for the past six years, resigned Wednesday to accept the same position at South Florida.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram detailed five favorites for the position Wednesday, and Evans was one of the five.

Scott Cathcart, LBSU's basketball contact in the sports information office, said because of the suddenness of Greenberg's resignation, no one had yet been contacted about the position, but that a timetable had been set up to find a new coach.

"Before the end of the month, we hope to name our new coach," Cathcart said.

The Press-Telegram also listed Gary Anderson, Long Beach City College head coach; Matt Doherty, a Kansas assistant; Pat Douglas, the Cal State-Bakersfield head coach; and Bill Odell, the Azusa Pacific head coach as leading candidates along with Evans.

Evans, an eight-year UA assistant, has had his name mentioned for head coaching positions before. He was the favorite for the Texas Christian job last year before the Horned Frogs gave the position to Oklahoma's Billy Tubbs.

Arizona defeated the 49ers in the first round of the NIT this past season 91-57. The 49ers finished 17-11 and won the Big West Conference regular-season title.

Evans was not available for comment.
