When a car loses a spark plug, its performance tends to lag. Arizona was playing without one of its spark plugs on Saturday, but like the Energizer bunny, it kept right on going.UA center fielder Alison Johnsen did not play in Saturday night's doubleheader with No. 11 California after spraining her ankle against Stanford on Friday night, but the Wildcats still found ways to sweep the Golden Bears.
"Everybody really stepped up," Arizona head coach Mike Candrea said. "We don't have to rely on one person to get us going."
Top-ranked UA (34-4 overall, 7-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference) wasn't hitting the ball well against the Bears thanks to winds blowing in at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium, but the team took advantage of two Cal errors to win the second game 5-2.
Freshman Lisa Pitt (8-0) took a one-hitter into the sixth inning before Cal (27-15, 8-6) finally put a run on the board. The Bears finished with just three hits, one being Melanie McCart's solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
"She's gotten ahead and she's thrown strikes," Candrea said of his freshman pitcher.
Senior Jenny Dalton paced the Wildcats at the plate by going 4-for-7 in the doubleheader with two RBI, two runs scored, and three stolen bases.
Carrie Dolan recorded her 22nd win of the year in beating the Bears 7-2 in the first game of the twin bill.
Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning in the second game, catcher Lety Pineda singled in Krista Gomez and Dalton and the Wildcats never looked back.
The Wildcats swept Stanford on Friday night 5-0 and 7-1.
Johnsen injured her ankle while rounding third base. She fell to the ground and had to be helped off the field. She was taken to University Medical Center, but x-rays were negative. Johnsen even showed up for Saturday's game on crutches.
Arizona catcher Leah Braatz was also among the crowd of 1,016 on Saturday night. Braatz, who redshirted this season, gave birth to her first child on Wednesday. She and husband Carlos Cochrane have named the boy Dominic Carlos.
The four wins give the Wildcats a two-game lead in the Pac-10 race after No. 2 Washington split with No. 3 UCLA. UA is two up on the Huskies and four games ahead of UCLA.
