Arizona, a team known for its ability to go deep, used a strong short game last night to defeat rival Arizona State 6-2 in the second game of a doubleheader at Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium. The top-ranked Wildcats (36-4 overall, 9-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference) took the first game of the night 8-2.
Clinging to a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning in the second game, UA sophomore catcher Lety Pineda led off the inning with a single to left. Freshman pitcher Lisa Pitt laid down a bunt in an attempt to sacrifice pinch-runner Tanya Farhat over to second, but both runners were safe thanks to an error by ASU third baseman Alyssa Johnson. An error on first baseman Tiana Hejduk's ground ball scored Farhat. Then, right fielder Brandi Shriver used a bunt single to load the bases. Left fielder Julie Reitan notched her second RBI of the game on a bloop single to left and Shriver then scored on a passed ball to provide the 6-2 final.
"We had to force some things and make things happen," Arizona head coach Mike Candrea said.
No. 20 Arizona State (22-17, 2-8) got on the board first thanks to Stacey Slick's RBI triple that scored Tanya Emersillo.
Sophomore Roxanne Tsosie kept the Wildcat bats in check by recording four strikeouts in the first two inning - including striking out the side in the second.
"She looked like a phenom in the first couple of innings," Candrea said.
But the Wildcats proved otherwise as they notched three runs in the bottom of the third.
Shriver led off the inning by taking advantage of the shallow Sun Devil infield and lofted a single over shortstop Tammy Lohmann's head.
Then, Reitan gave the phrase "take one for the team" a new meaning.
Again it was a bunt in attempt to move Shriver over, but the throw from Johnson hit Reitan in the shoulder and caromed into the right field corner. Shriver scored and Reitan wound up on second.
"I had one last week like that," Reitan said. "But that one hit me in the butt. I'd rather take one off the shoulder than in the butt."
Freshman Michelle Churnock - who was 4-for-5 on the night - singled in Reitan and scored herself on senior Krista Gomez's sacrifice fly.
Pitt looked shaky at times but still went the distance to stay undefeated and earn her ninth win of the year.
Dueces were wild for the Wildcats in the first game.
UA scored two runs in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Wildcats had a big inning brewing in the third but saw it cut short by bad baserunning.
Pitt singled in Gomez but Dalton got caught in a rundown while trying to score. After tagging Dalton out, Johnson whipped the ball over to Hermosillo who tagged out Pitt as she tried to sneak into second.
"The baserunning was atrocious," Candrea said. "We just didn't use our noggins tonight."
