The Wildcats head to Los Angeles this weekend to play a three-game series with No. 8 UCLA. With its seven-game losing streak in tow, the Wildcats are ready to throw everything it has at the Bruins. Arizona won two of three in the series they played in early March at Sancet Field."We did well against them at home, and we feel that we're capable of doing that again," Arizona head coach Jerry Kindall said of the Bruins. "We feel pretty good about going over there."
The Bruins are currently one game out of first place in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division behind USC. They face Arizona (20-23 overall, 4-14 in the Six-Pac) following a 6-5 loss on Tuesday to Long Beach State. UCLA (22-13, 13-5) is led offensively by third baseman Zack Ammirato, whose .345 batting average is a team best.
The real story behind UCLA is its pitching. Sophomore left-hander Jim Parque is third in the Six-Pac in pitching with a record of 7-0 and a 3.38 ERA. Parque, who is slated to start in tonight's game, has an average of 8.51 strikeouts per nine innings, which ranks him fourth in the conference.
The Wildcats are hoping that one man can save them, and that man is senior left-hander Ben White. White serves as the troubleshooter on the Wildcat staff and comes in whenever the need arises. He has been the most consistent and effective pitcher on the Arizona staff.
