A former UA student was arrested early Sunday morning after he allegedly killed a Tucson man in a fight Friday evening.

Jason C. Radford, 20, of the 6500 block of South Downing, was arrested on a charge of second-degree murder after being questioned by Pima County Sheriff's deputies early Sunday morning.

Deputies responded to an assault at an apartment complex, 4200 E. Benson Highway, at 10:45 p.m. Friday. They found the victim, Jason A. Travers, 18, of the 5600 block of South Park Avenue, being treated for head injuries, said Michael O'Connor, a Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Witnesses told police Radford made a derogatory remark toward Travers' girlfriend. A fight ensued between the two, ending when Travers fell and hit his head, O'Connor said. Travers was taken to University Medical Center and died at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.

O'Connor said blunt force trauma, an injury caused by a blunt object, rarely results from a fist fight.

Officers interviewed Radford at 12:30 a.m. Sunday and later arrested him.

Radford left the University of Arizona after the spring 1995 semester.

Second-degree murder carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison without the possibility of the death penalty.
