The seniors have one last chance to win at home.

With five seniors graduating from the tennis program, the men's tennis will have an emotional closure when No. 19 Arizona (10-8 overall, 2-7 in Pacific 10 Conference) hosts New Mexico State today at 1:30 p.m. at the Robson Tennis Center.

Seniors Chris Jenkins, James Rey, Edward Schwartz, Jan Anderson and Vuk Tapuskovic will be in action in Tucson for the last time.

Besides winning for the seniors, the Wildcats have a chance to claim the top seed in the West Regional on May 3-5 in Las Vegas.

According to the ITA/Rolex rankings released yesterday, the Wildcats are the top-ranked team from the West that is not ranked in the top eight nationally. The top eight teams get automatic berths into the NCAA Tournament. The rest, like UA, play for NCAA berths in regional competition.

"We would love to be a top-2 seed in the regional, because the top two seeds are moved into the semis and only have to play two matches," assistant coach Tom Hagedorn said. "If you are a third through six seed then you have to play three days in a row, which is rough."

Other teams from the West that are ranked include: UC-Irvine at No. 22, UNLV at No. 23 and California at No. 28.

New Mexico State is coming off a 4-3 win over Northern Arizona and is looking for its 15th win.

Led by sophomore Martin Ostberg, a 21-match winner, and Andy Caldwell, a graduate of Canyon Del Oro High School in Tucson, the Aggies pose a threat.

The Wildcats have several players with injuries, ranging from junior Henrik Wagner's sprained right middle finger, to the flu that has sidelined sophomore Roland Kupka.

"By no means is it a scapegoat. It is something that happens to every team," Hagedorn said. "Every team gets banged up, so we have to suck it up for the next two matches."

The Wildcats end the team season Saturday against Arizona State in Tempe, then they have the individual Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif., on April 24-28.

Anderson, Arizona's No. 1, moved up to No. 74 in the singles rankings. Besides Anderson, who joined the team as a sophomore, the seniors have been together since 1992.

"We are definitely not looking forward to it (the seniors graduating). This is a great group," Hagedorn said. "We have such a superb group of guys, I hate to even think about it. With some guys you don't ever want to see them leave."
