Ex-employee shoots guard, two workers at Hughes plant

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) -An ex-employee opened fire at a Hughes electronics plant yesterday, wounding a security guard and two workers and taking a man hostage before he was arrested, police said.

The 62-year-old gunman resigned in 1993 for undisclosed health reasons after 16 years at Hughes, and was unhappy about unsettled medical claims, KCAL-TV reported.

Gunman kills two near Vt. college, then commits suicide

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (AP) - A gunman shot three people, two of them fatally, before killing himself yesterday outside an apartment complex near Middlebury College.

The college, a half-mile away, locked buildings and told students to stay in their rooms as police searched for the gunman.

The search was called off after four hours when police determined that one of the bodies found at the low-income complex was that of the gunman. Authorities identified him as Richard Stevens, 44, of Rutland.

Defense attorney: Davis guilty of killing, not molesting

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - An attorney defending the man accused of killing Polly Klaas unveiled his strategy for the first time yesterday - he admitted his client is guilty.

Deputy Public Defender Barry Collins said he would contest only one issue - that Richard Allen Davis sexually molested the 12-year-old in addition to murdering her.

Collins' candid admission that ''the evidence in this case will be overwhelming that (Davis) did in fact kill Polly Klaas,'' came as a surprise to the girl's family.
