As senior Vuk Tapuskovic sat by himself in the top row of the bleachers, staring over the Robson Tennis Center, it became evident to him that this would be the last time that he would compete there.

"I realized that this was going to be a pretty emotional ending, It will definitely be weird seeing all these guys next year (he is coming back to finish school in the fall) and not being able to play on the team," Tapuskovic said.

No. 19 Arizona (11-8 overall, 2-7 in Pacific 10 Conference) used all five seniors in their 6-1 defeat of New Mexico State.

Those playing for the last time at home included captain Chris Jenkins, Jan Anderson, James Rey, Tapuskovic, and Edward Schwartz. All but Anderson came out victorious. Anderson lost 6-2, 7-6 to Martin Ostberg at the No. 1 position.

Jenkins won 6-1, 7-6 over Inigo Ojer at No. 2 and with Tapuskovic at No. 2 doubles, the two won 8-5 over Andy Caldwell and Paco Parades.

"I have some of the best memories of my life here and with these guys," Jenkins said.

Schwartz defeated Jason Noble 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Rey beat Parades 7-6, 6-2 at No. 6.

"It is kind of sad that this is my last match, but it also is gratifying that I could do something for this team," Rey said. "When I came to this program maybe we were top fifty and now we are top twenty, so that makes me proud of what we have accomplished over the years."

Rey has been a regular for Arizona the last three season, but saw his role change to emotional leader this season.

"Had we not done so well the last three years, we would not have recruited these guys," Rey said. "I got these guys here, now they can win for the program and grow from it like I have."

All the seniors except for Anderson, who came to Arizona as a sophomore, have been together since they were freshman.

"I was great to go out of this place a winner, we have had a great season so far this year," Schwartz said.

Rounding out the wins were junior Tom Haugland winning 7-6, 6-2 over Andy Caldwell at No. 4 and sophomore Roland Kupka beating Yven Heine 7-5, 6-4 at No. 5.

The Wildcats will face Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe to tune up for the Pac-10 Championships in Ojai, Calif. on April 24-28. The Championships is an individual tournament, no team scores will be kept.

Following the Pac-10s is the West Regional tournament in Las Vegas on May 3-5. With their ranking the Wildcats should receive either the top one or two seed in the tournament, which would give the team a bye directly in the into the semifinals.

"It is a whole new ballgame in regionals, as long as you are in anything can happen," Rey said.
