The attic and roof of an off-campus U.S. Geological Survey building on UA property caught fire Wednesday evening.

Police reports stated flames were spouting from the roof of the building, 1675 W. Anklam Road, at 6:45 p.m.

A USGS employee who was returning to the building at the time smelled smoke and called 911.

University police and Tucson Fire Department engines responded and extinguished the fire, which was confined to the roof and attic area.

The building monitor told officers roofers had been working in the area and had left around 6 p.m.

A TFD arson investigator at the scene said the fire was caused by a spark or a cigarette butt igniting sawdust in the attic. Investigators determined the fire was not arson-related.

The employee and the building monitor were treated for smoke inhalation by TFD paramedics because they had reentered the flaming structure to move computer equipment and try to put out the blaze themselves.

The value of the damage was unknown.

University police arrested a Tucson man on DUI charges Wednesday after he was seen swerving through traffic, almost hitting a bicyclist on North Campbell Avenue north of East Speedway Boulevard.

Officers stopped the 1985 Ford Bronco driven by Geoffery S. Lewis, 21, of the 8300 block of East Shasta Drive, near the intersection of East Helen Street and Campbell Avenue at 12:13 a.m. Police reports indicate the interior of the vehicle smelled of alcohol.

Lewis reportedly failed field sobriety tests and registered .116 and .129 on subsequent Intoxilyzer tests.

Lewis was cited on charges of driving under the influence and DUI with a blood-alcohol concentration of .10 or above. He was released from police headquarters.
