It was supposed to be a rout, and that is exactly what happened.

UA's fourth-ranked women's tennis team (19-3 overall, 7-2 in the Pacific 10 Conference) defeated New Mexico 7-1 yesterday at the Robson Tennis Center.

"It was good. New Mexico is a decent team, and we fought them all day," UA head coach Becky Bell said.

Senior Olivia Gravereaux won for the first time in her brief Arizona career. Paired with Vicky Maes at the No. 1 doubles position, the two beat Alicia Meraz and Sanggeetha Vijayakumar 8-4. In her recovery from wrist surgery on her right arm, Gravereaux, who has only this year of eligibility left after using three in France, has had to watch from the sideline.

"It feels good. It has been 10 months," Gravereaux said. "I would say that I am around 70 percent back. There is no pain, but I have this thing in my head that keeps me on edge when I hit a forehand."

Gravereaux was defeated by Stanford in her first doubles match. Expected to be OK'd for singles in a month by her doctors, Gravereaux will compete with Maes at the Pac-10 Championships in the top-flight doubles position.

"I know that I cannot play singles yet, so I am happy to play doubles," Gravereaux said. "It is better than nothing at all, and I will be playing singles in one month, so I am happy."

All-American Maes won her 42nd match of the year 6-2, 6-0 over Angela Skrbic at No. 1.

Maes played with a sore right forearm that has not had time to heal. She thought about sitting out this match to rest the arm.

"My arm is sore, but I love to compete," Maes said.

Sophomore Betsy Miringoff had the most trouble of the day winning 6-7, 6-1, 6-2 over Aimee Hites at No. 3.

"Betsy did a great job. That girl she played had a lot of heart and desire, and she had to battle all day to win," Bell said.

Stephanie Sammaritano, Karen Goldstein, and Khristen Pietrucha all won 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2, 4 and 5 positions, respectively. The No. 2 doubles team of Pietrucha and Brook Herman, playing together for the first time this season, were defeated 8-5 by the team of Skrbic and Natasha Jones.

The Wildcats finished the dual-match season 13-0 against nonconference teams, while upping their home-match record to 13-1.

"We are good at home because the courts are very fast here. The teams we play are not used to the courts, and with the wind and altitude, it is quite an advantage," Sammaritano said.

The Wildcats have already clinched second place in the Pac-10 for the first time in Bell's 11-year career at Arizona.

"It's nice. I don't get too wrapped up in the Pac-10," Bell said. "There have been times where we were last in the Pac-10 and still in the top 10 in the country."

UA hosts Arizona State Saturday at 1 p.m. at Robson.
