On March 24 at the PONY/Louisville Tournament in Fullerton, Calif., the Arizona softball team blasted Washington 9-0.On Saturday in Seattle, the Huskies exacted some revenge.
No. 2 UW completed a sweep of the top-ranked Wildcats thanks to a combined no-hitter from Eve Gaw and Heather Meyer that led to a 7-0 victory. That game, the second game of a doubleheader in front of 3,406 fans at Husky Softball Stadium, was the third-largest crowd in NCAA history.
Washington won the first game of the twin bill with a 2-1 extra-inning win.
The Wildcats (39-7 overall, 11-3 in the Pacific 10 Conference) held a two-game conference lead going into the weekend. With the sweep, Washington (40-7, 11-3) takes control of the race, because they have taken three of four conference games from UA.
Arizona didn't exactly hit the cover off the ball in the first game either. Consecutive doubles by Alison Johnsen and Jenny Dalton amounted for UA's only run of the game. The Wildcats finished with just six hits off Meyer.
Washington tied the game at one in the sixth inning, when Jeanine Giordano singled down the first base line to score Becky Newbry, and took the lead, when Newbry singled in Leah Francis in the bottom of the eighth.
Each team has 14 games remaining in their conference schedule. UA has two ranked teams left, and both are road games - No. 11 Cal and No. 20 ASU. The biggest contest left on UW's schedule is a home date with No. 3 UCLA.
