Laxcats take 2nd
What a difference a year can make.
After going winless last year, the UA women's club lacrosse "B" team (8-4-1) finished second at the Southern California Women's Lacrosse Association Division II playoffs on Sunday afternoon in California.
Arizona lost to the University of California at Santa Barbara "B" team in the championship game 11-6.
The Laxcats led early in the contest 3-1, something that the Gauchos were not used to and led to their frustration, Arizona head coach Christina Dellorusso said.
"They were used to just coming out and blowing teams out," Dellorusso said.
The score was tied at 6 at halftime.
The Laxcats, who played with just one substitute player compared to the Gauchos who had five, were worn down in the second half.
"Everyone was tired, and we couldn't stop their fast breaks," freshman goalie Tami Hubbert said.
With the game being played in California, the Gauchos had fan support, which helped to motivate them, Dellorusso said.
"We were involved in a very physical game," Dellorusso said.
Santa Barbara finished their first game at 11 a.m. and had the luxury of playing the game with three hours of rest.
Arizona defeated the Cal Poly "A" team 10-8 in a morning game that ended at 1, giving them just one hour of rest before the matchup with the Guachos.
Arizona suffered a crushing defeat to Cal Poly in February, 12-5.
The game was tight throughout, and the Laxcats never got a lead bigger than two, Dellorusso said.
Hubbert came up big in the victory with 20 saves. She only allowed one goal in the second half.
Graduate student Susan Klemmer had four goals and junior Jillian Gant had three.
Tricats find success at weekend meets
The University of Arizona Tricats Triathlon Club had a successful competition in Yuma and Rocky Point this weekend.
Despite tough competition at the Yuma Tin Man international distance triathlon, Tricat club founder Andy Huxtable finished fourth overall in 2 hours, 10 minutes and 54 seconds, and Wade Grow finished fifth in 2:12.02.
Lisa Waschler and Lara Dragoo took first and second, respectively, in the 16- to 19-year-old age group for women. Shea Witham captured first in the same division for men. Dave Burns took second place in the 20- to 24-year-old age group.
The Rocky Point race boasted similar results with Nancy Conway capturing the 20-24 year-old group for women.
