All-American sophomore Vicky Maes is expected to win it all.

She's entering today's Pacific 10 Conference Championship as the top-ranked player in the nation with a 42-7 record. As the No. 1 seed, she should bring back the trophy.

On the other hand, sophomore Betsy Miringoff is on the bubble. Currently ranked 48th, she needs a good showing to get herself into the NCAA tournament.

Maes can afford to lose, Miringoff can't.

"You never know who is going to make it (to the NCAAs), but I am going in to do my best," said Miringoff, a sophomore. "Every match is important to me."

The 4th-ranked Arizona women's tennis team finished its regular season and will tune up for the NCAA tournament at the Pac-10s in Ojai, Calif., today through Sunday.

The Wildcats are currently ranked high enough to bypass their regional tournament and enter the NCAA tournament directly in May. The top 10 teams get automatic berths. The official seedings and teams participating will be announced April 29.

In Ojai, the Wildcats will participate individually in singles as well as doubles. There are 32 players competing in the singles tournament with 16 doubles teams competing for the conference crown.

Playing singles along with Maes and Miringoff, junior Stephanie Sammaritano and freshman Karen Goldstein will represent UA in the top-flight division.

"Vicky is in (the NCAAs), and Stephanie has played well enough to definitely be in," head coach Becky Bell said. "If Betsy has a good Ojai, it would really improve her chance at getting in the (NCAA) individual."

Maes opens the tournament against Amy Chiminello of Stanford, while Sammaritano will face Elise Adams of Oregon.

Miringoff begins with Narelle Hall of Washington State. Goldstein has the toughest first round facing defending national champion Keri Phebus of UCLA.

In doubles, Maes and senior Olivia Gravereaux take on Oregon's team of Shanelle Kaneahiro and Ali Napier. Miringoff and freshman Monique Allegre are up against Washington's Katherine Costain and Kori Sosnowy, and UA's Goldstein and Sammaritano will play Arizona State's Reka Cseresnyes and Torey Pratt.

Maes has been suffering from a sore muscle in her right arm, but has yet to miss a match.

Paired with Gravereaux, UA's No. 1 doubles team is still getting used to each other. Gravereaux is returning from wrist surgery that had sidelined her until April 13 - when the two competed together for the first time.

"It will be a great chance for Olivia and Vicky to get some good matches together," Bell said.

Following the tournament, the Wildcats will get a rest before heading to the NCAAs in Tallahassee, Fla., at Florida State's tennis complex in May.
