Men start Pac-10s

The Arizona men's golf team will be in Newport Beach, Calif., today for opening round play at the Pacific 10 Conference Championships.

The nation's sixth-ranked player, Arizona senior Ted Purdy, leads No. 8 Wildcats against a field that includes No. 3 Arizona State, No. 11 Southern Cal, No. 18 Stanford and No. 22 Oregon State.

The tournament will feature 36 holes today and a round of 18 tomorrow and Wednesday with the top four scores counting towards the team score.

Purdy, 32nd-ranked Rory Sabbatini, senior Matt Bergstrom, freshman Andy Barnes and junior Gary Matthews will play for UA.

Purdy has four top-15 finishes this year including a victory at the PING Arizona Intercollegiate. Sabbatini has finished in the top-10 four times this year.

Tee off today is set for 8 a.m., with teams starting at the first and 10th holes. Play begins from the first hole at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow and Wednesday. The Wildcats are grouped in threesomes with golfers from Washington and Washington State.
