University police closed off Bear Down Gymnasium after Tucson Fire Department firefighters discovered a freon leak in the basement Saturday morning.

A UA employee called university police at 11:43 a.m. after he and some friends began to cough unexplainably after entering the basement of Bear Down Gymnasium, 1428 E. University Blvd.

TFD officials responded and discovered a high concentration of freon gas from an unknown source, police reports stated. They disconnected natural gas lines from the building and recommended ventilating the building.

Officers evacuated participants of a youth basketball tournament and blocked building entrances with police tape. After two hours and three telephone messages, Facilities Maintenance had not responded to ventilate the basement, so officers locked the doors and left.

Police reports indicate janitorial crews later cleared the basement with fans.

A UA student called police Saturday after a male exposed himself and masturbated in front of him in a men's restroom at Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall, 1420 E. Fifth St.

The victim said he was in a third-floor restroom at 2:01 a.m. when a male came out of a stall with his pants down. The suspect reportedly then "exposed his genitals and began masturbating in front of the victim," police reports stated.

The man then asked the student if "he wanted to see how big he was," according to police reports.

The victim left the scene to contact a resident assistant and lost track of the suspect. Police searched the hall and surrounding area without success.

A UA employee called police Sunday to report the theft of a $16,000 Shimapzu Chemical Separator from a room in the Old Chemistry building, 1306 E. University Blvd.

The separator, which had just been delivered and was still in its box, was taken between 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. No signs of forced entry were visible and over 300 people have keys to the room where the box was stored.

A 20-year-old student had to be physically escorted from party at Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, 1509 E. Second St., Saturday after he reportedly punched a female partygoer and tried to hit a security guard.

At 2:04 p.m., officers took the student outside the fraternity grounds. The visibly drunk student accidentally spit in an officer's face as he was being questioned.

The student was warned for minor in consumption of alcohol and released at the scene.
