With the help of strong performances from shot putter Chima Ugwu, pole vaulter Dominic Johnsen and javelin thrower Tapio Kolunsarka, the UA men's track and field team tied for eighth place with Wake Forest at the NCAA Championships last week in Eugene, Ore. It was Arizona's highest finish since 1984, when the team finished sixth.

The Wildcats accomplished their feat despite the fact that Bob Keino did not run due to a previous injury.

Ugwu finished second in the shot put and sixth in the discus. Johnsen and Kolunsarka each finished third in their events.

The Wildcat women limped to a 49th-place finish after scoring just three points. Arizona's points came from Michelle Johnson's sixth-place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles.
