Oasis Center Director Irene Anderson said she feels it is important for a rape victim to know of the excellent services that are available in the community, and the Oasis Center can help in that capacity.

The University of Arizona has a new center on campus for victims of rape and sexual assault.

The Oasis Center for Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence was created to provide information, support, and referral to victims of rape and sexual assault, said Irene Anderson, the center's director.

"Different people have different needs," Anderson said. "I'm here to help victims think about what their choices are and help them choose what the best plan for them is."

The center coordinates the rape crisis services of the Tucson community and other campus departments.

"A victim can go to the center to learn what the community has to offer and be counseled as to which services suit their needs," Anderson said. Excellent services are available in the community, she said.

"Some people call nine-one-one immediately and aggressively pursue legal options. Others seek counseling first," Anderson said. The center will help regardless of what they decide to do, she said.

Victims have a variety of issues and need to take care of their physical and mental health, Anderson said.

"I refer some people to Campus Health for medical intervention, counseling and psychological services," Anderson said.

Some students are referred to the Dean of Students Office for documentation and possible disciplinary action, she said.

"It shows a really important commitment on the part of the university," said Mary Koss, a nationally-known rape researcher and UA professor of family and community medicine. "It was absolutely needed."

Anderson said she would like to enhance the visibility of the center. Everyone should know what the center does and where it is located.

"U of A is very clearly committed to respond to the needs of students, staff and faculty who are impacted by sexual assault and related violence," Anderson said.

The center will be working with Health Promotion to educate both men and women on campus, so they can be better informed and know what the risks are, Anderson said.

The Oasis Center, located in Old Main Room 234, is open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Anderson recommends that victims call the 24-hour rape crisis center line at 327-7273 if they need to speak to someone after hours.
