The University of Arizona offers an array of services to its students.

Services range from free tutoring to telephones - you just have to know where to look.

The following services are a small part of the whole, but should point you in the right direction. The staffs in each of these offices are also a great source of information.

One of the lesser known services on campus is check cashing. Upstairs in the Student Union, tucked away in the All Aboard office, you can cash your personal checks for a 25-cent fee - just bring your student identification card.

Tutoring services are available through some academic departments, such as astronomy, mathematics and physics, as well as through the University Learning Center.

The ULC offers several tutoring options:

• Minority students and financial aid recipients can receive free tutoring, as well as the opportunity to participate in paid programs such as Fall Transition, a mentoring program.

• A private tutor referral pairs students with tutors. Fees are set by the tutor - usually $5 to $10 per hour.

• Tutor Share is a group tutoring option designed to keep costs low. Groups meet once a week for 15 weeks at a total cost of $15 per person.

• Free learning strategies workshops are offered throughout the semester.

• The First Year Student Center is a free, drop-in tutoring program offered several evenings per week in the Bear Down Gymnasium.

Career Services, on the lower level of Old Main, provides free help in job searches, before and after graduation. They offer:

• Career Week - an employment fair.

• Individual career counseling for undecided students.

• Internship and cooperative education listings and placement assistance.

• On-campus interviews.

• The Wildcat Job Line - a free, telephone listing of part-time and full-time job openings.

The Associated Students, at the top, west side of the Student Union, provide at least 15 programs and services to students, along with the opportunity to get involved with student government. Services include:

• Escort Service - a free service offering safe rides around campus at night and daytime rides for disabled students.

• Legal Services - an attorney is available for free consultation on any legal issue. Call ASUA at 621-ASUA for an appointment.

• A notary service.

The Center for Off-Campus Students provides:

• Free listings of off-campus housing and roommate matching.

• A courtesy phone and message service.

• The Drop-in Center, in Student Union Room 353, houses all these services and provides an area for studying, socializing or eating lunch.

For the Internet savvy, the UA has its own site on the World Wide Web, UA Info, that provides detailed information on the resources available to students. Included is information on class schedules and availability, financial aid, guides to ASUA services, minority resources and much more.
