They have been here before.

For the second straight year, the Arizona baseball team has opened up its season with a promising series against New Mexico. The task now is to keep the momentum going.

After taking two of three from the Lobos to open the year, the Arizona baseball team will take the field for the first of a short, two-game series today against Cal State-Dominguez Hills at Sancet Field.

Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.

Freshman left-hander James Johnson will take the mound for the Wildcats. He pitched one inning on Saturday against the Lobos, yielding just one run while walking one and striking out two.

"If we play like we did this weekend, we should be able to win," Arizona assistant coach Jerry Stitt said.

The Wildcats surely would like to play as they did this weekend, but would probably like to improve in one statistic - runners left on base.

Stitt calls it an "overrated statistic," but one cannot ignore the fact that UA stranded 11 runners in their 6-4 win on Sunday and 12 in their 10-7 loss on Saturday.

Dominguez-Hills visited Sancet Field last season and ran into Ryan Frace. Frace, who has since moved on to the Philadelphia Phillies organization, pitched a complete game and twice pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam to lead the Wildcats to a 4-3 win. Their first meeting was rained out.

The series will conclude Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live by KNST (AM 990).

The Wildcats will continue their month-long homestand this weekend with a three-game series against the Washington State Cougars.
