'Mutato''s writers 'indier-than-thou'

Editor:

As a music enthusiast, I must say that the Mutato staff, namely the music writers, are the biggest bunch of indier-than-thou non-journalists that have ever been fortunate enough to have their dribble published in a (questionably) respectable arts forum. The thing that set me off was Thursday's idiotic column by Robert Breckenridge called "Music Preview."

Candlebox is far from the top of my popularity list. At the end of the segment, he writes, "Seaweed is pretty good, though." Why not focus the article on Seaweed? Certainly they could use the exposure, as they are not as well known as their tourmates. And Deep Blue Something? Seven Mary Three?? I'm not a huge fan of either band, so I wouldn't have written about them. Perhaps Breckenridge was unaware of two other acts performing in Tucson during the same time frame.

My favorite band, One, gave a show at Third Stone Bar & Grill on Thursday night. Another fabulous performer, Kelly Joe Phelps, played over the weekend as well. These are certainly two less-publicized shows by musicians that could have used the space Breck enridge so ignorantly wasted to protect his "indie credibility" by ripping on bands that, while not exactly my favorites either, do the city of Tucson a small favor by performing here. Judging a band by their videos?

Sure, some bands are selling a complete package, but my final judgement of a band lies in their music, not in whether or not their singer/guitarist has big sideburns. If Breckenridge even considers himself a partially serious music journalist, he would be well-advised to do the same.
