MEChA shows own racism in 'token'

Editor:

This letter is in response to the letter written by members of the student group MEChA on Jan. 29 (Kappa Sigma fails to accept responsibility) By warning Mr. Isaac Martinez that he might potentially be nothing more than the "token" Hispanic in his fratern ity, MEChA shows the racism that occurs within their organization. To say a non-Anglo member of a fraternity must be a "token" is every bit as racist as the alleged comment which began this whole incident in the first place. Fraternities and sororities do not take in members to fill any racial quotas. They take people who fit the character and social makeup of their organization. In the past many of our fellow students have seen MEChA as a somewhat radical although necessary voice of activism on campus. I myself have attended a few of their meetings, and while I never completely agreed with all of MEChA's positions, the enthusiasm they show for the Hispanic/Chicano community has always been something to admire. It just seems now they have gone a little t oo far. While there is no doubt that racism still permeates our campus, it is hard to believe this commotion is over an exchange of words which should have been settled on the athletic field. Who won that soccer match, anyway?
