The Arizona baseball team played a game yesterday that can best be summed up in two words: well rounded.

The team used dramatic defensive plays, solid pitching and its usual consistent hitting to beat Cal State-Dominguez Hills 10-6 in front of 389 fans at Sancet Field.

The win elevated the Wildcats to 4-1 on the season. The Toros fell to 0-2.

Plays like UA right fielder Colin Porter ending the second inning by throwing out a runner at home, or first baseman Brian Becker's diving catch near the Wildcats' dugout to end the ninth and win the game, epitomize Arizona head coach Jerry Kindall's push for solid defense this season.

"That play was one of the best I've seen in a long time," Kindall said of Becker's catch.

Senior relief pitcher Ben White pitched six innings in relief of starter Rob Shabansky to earn the win. White (1-0) allowed two runs and struck out four.

"I didn't feel particularly strong today, I got stronger as I went. In a relieving role that is what you want to do," White said.

Kindall said White provided stability as a reliever.

"Ben is a seasoned guy, he's been four years in the program and he has been in that situation many times," Kindall said. "We needed a guy to throw strikes because Shabansky was struggling."

The Wildcats' hitting was solid through seven innings, but in the eighth, they simply exploded. UA scored five runs in the inning keyed by Jeff Gjerde's RBI double that scored the go-ahead run.

"Nobody out, men on first and second, conventional wisdom might say bunt in that situation, tied game bottom of the eighth, but he is our best hitter," Kindall said of Gjerde. "There was never any question in (batting coach) Jerry Stitt's mind that he would swing away."

The Wildcat defense, which committed just one error, was a big boost for White.

"This is an absolutely fabulous team to pitch for, you just feel like you get 2-0, throw it right down the middle and let them hit it because we got a great defense out there," White said.

"It was a good test for us," Becker said. "They came out and played really hard. Their pitchers weren't really overpowering, but we're a good hitting ball club and that's what we showed this week."
