The "fro" will go for one of two resident assistants. One will shave his head as part of an AIDS fund-raiser.

Feb. 3 through 10, students of Arizona-Sonora and Coronado residence halls will compete to raise money for the Tucson AIDS Project in the first "Fro Must Go" competition, said Cynthia Threatt, Arizona-Sonora hall director.

Two jugs, one labeled Arizona-Sonora and one Coronado, sit in the hall lobbies. Students may donate money to either hall.

One resident assistant from each hall with "large hair" has volunteered to shave his head if his hall raises less money, Threatt said.

"If I'm going to get a haircut, I'm going to do it for a good cause," said Benjamin Bartley, sixth floor resident assistant for Arizona-Sonora, who has not cut his hair since October.

"I'm kinda nervous about it," he said. "They (residents) all wanna see me bald. This is a way for them to get even."

"It sparks a bit of competition," said Coronado's eighth-floor resident assistant, Christopher Dicks, whose last haircut was in late fall.

"But my hair will grow back (if it's shaved), and it's for a good cause."

Bartley said he hoped the competition would raise at least $1,000. Combined, the halls have a population of more than 1,000 students.

Jennifer Giordano, Coronado resident and education sophomore, plans to donate up to $5 to Arizona-Sonora Hall so she can see Dicks bald.

"Most people like to see the RAs humiliated to get back at them somehow," said systems engineering freshman Kelly Swiryn, who is Bartley's resident.

The winner will shave the loser's head Feb. 11 at 5 p.m. in front of Arizona-Sonora.
