A Tucson man died at a local hospital Wednesday night after being struck by a car while in-line skating near the UA campus.

At about 10:33 p.m., Michael E. McAlpin, 43, of the 3500 block of East Cody Avenue, was skating eastbound with traffic in the right-hand turn lane of East Speedway Boulevard at North Campbell Avenue, Tucson Police Department reports stated.

A Ford Mustang driven by Thomas V. Slanina, 24, which was also traveling eastbound on Speedway, hit the victim, police reports stated.

A Tucson police spokesman said the driver of the car was passed out at the wheel and a passenger was attempting to control the vehicle when it struck the victim and went out of control through a red light.

It was unknown why the driver was passed out, however, the collision report stated "ill ability" influenced the accident.

McAlpin was transported to University Medical Center by a Tucson Fire Department ambulance. He was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.

It was unknown if anyone in the vehicle was injured.

No criminal charges have been filed in the case.
