Boxes line the halls as employees at the Extended University await the go-ahead to move into their new home at 888 N. Euclid Ave.
Even though the Extended University was told to begin moving into the Administrative Annex Friday, the Fire Marshal's Office will inspect the building's fire system today, and, barring any complications, the building will then be cleared for occupancy.
"A lot of departments are pretty unhappy right now," said Robert Preble, project manager for facilities management, adding that the uncertainty of the situation has been difficult.
Extended University will be the first department to move, Preble said, followed by Campus and Facilities Planning. Seven other departments € Cultural Affairs, Office of Research and Contract Analysis, Office of Community Affairs, Office of Public Information, Early Outreach, Office of Technology Transfer and Sponsored Projects Services € will relocate to the building during the university-wide holiday shutdown between Christmas and New Years.
Preble said it is important to quickly move the nine departments, all of which occupy leased space, but he added they will not sacrifice safety for dollars.
UA Fire Safety Officer Herb Wagner said the City of Tucson will conduct a "ring-out" of all fire alarms and verify they are reporting to a master panel. He said the building could receive its certificate of occupancy today, but it could take a few days to work through problems that may have occurred during construction such as cut wires.
Wagner said it took about three days for the newly-constructed La Paz Residence Hall to receive its certificate.
Eventually 17 departments will occupy the building. Extended University students will be allowed evening access to the building's third floor via the parking lot bridge. Other university employees will be required to enter the building through an evening entrance door on the main level.
