It may have been an Arizona rivalry, but it was a junior college transfer from Brockport, N.Y., that helped the No. 5 Icecats to a 7-3 win over No. 10 Arizona State Saturday night.

Andy Knick, a junior right-winger from Erie Community College, had just one goal and one assist but it was his aggressive play on the boards that helped create chances for his teammates.

"What we need is some people to get in and muck it up and get some garbage goals like we did tonight," Knick said.

The Icecat faithful have taken a quick liking to the scrappy veteran, and a passerby chided Knick that perhaps it was time to start the "Andy Knick Fan Club."

Knick got credit for an assist on Sam Battaglia's goal in the second period that broke a 3-3 tie. His goal at 14:14 in the third period put the Icecats on top 6-3 and all but iced the game.

The win increased the Icecats' winning streak over the Ice Devils to 64, a streak that dates to March 1983.

The Icecats (9-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Kevin Oztekin and Brian Consolino. It looked as if the rout was on, but the Ice Devils (8-2) had other ideas.

At 8:27 in the first, with the Icecats on a power play, center Mark Parris stole a pass on his own blue line and fed a breaking Stefan Richardson for the score.

The Icecats answered 30 seconds later when defenseman Joel Nussbaum stole a clearing shot in the attacking zone and fed Sam Battaglia, who beat ASU goalie Greg Powers low for the score.

"You saw a team with 11 new guys play with a lot of character out there tonight," Icecat coach Leo Golembiewski said.

With just under seven minutes to play in the first, center Steve Hammett brought the Ice Devils back to within one goal off assists from Sean Sapienza and Kevin Brenda. Hammett was absent in Friday night's 7-2 Icecat victory after he was suspended for a vicious slash on a Stanford player the week before.

Arizona State tied it at three on Jed Snyder's power play goal with 6:37 gone in the second period. After that, Icecat Joel Hilshey shut down the Devils.

"Hilshey played a great second half of the game," Golembiewski said.

Hilshey pulled a groin in the second and had already been playing with pulled muscles.

"I have to play like this every day," said Hilshey, who faced 21 shots. "Every day I'm in the doctor's office."

Oztekin's second goal of the game and Knick's score made it 6-3 late in the third.

From then on, what was an unusually disciplined game turned dirty. Between the 17:05 and 17:53 marks, two fights occurred, resulting in 56 minutes of penalties.

At 18:29, Brian Consolino was the recipient of Powers' over-commitment on a pass. He skated about 40 feet out on the ice but failed to clear the puck and Consolino put it into the empty net for the final score.
