Two suspects wanted for a series of robberies that included two campus-area businesses were arrested Sunday morning on Tucson's southeast side.Subway Sandwich & Salads, 914 E. Speedway Blvd., was robbed Aug. 28, and Circle K, 1610 E. Sixth St., was robbed Sept. 1. The two crimes are part of what police believe is a string of 18 robberies since Aug. 23.
The two men were arrested after a Tucson Police Department officer spotted one of the two suspects.
The first suspect, Armando Alvarez, 27, of the 4000 block of East 32nd Street, was arrested at 29th Street and Aviation Parkway. Later that day, the second suspect, Vincent P. Clark, 34, of a general delivery address, was arrested at the Sun-ray Motel, 220 E. Benson Highway.
Alvarez was identified through photos from surveillance cameras at two businesses that he is suspected to have robbed, said Sgt. Eugene Mejia, a TPD spokesman. Mejia said police were led to Clark after questioning Alvarez.
Both suspects are being held in Pima County Jail on $500,000 bond after being arraigned yesterday.
Alvarez was charged yesterday with three counts of robbery and three counts of armed robbery. Clark was charged yesterday with one count of robbery and four counts of armed robbery.
About $100 was taken from the Subway the afternoon of Aug. 28, said Michael Garvey, an employee at the store. He said there were no injuries.
Subway does hourly security money drops, meaning that the store does not have a substantial amount of money at its locations, Garvey said.
"Hopefully this will discourage others from targeting this business," Garvey said. "It was a strange robbery. They quietly walked in and quietly walked out."
Garvey said the customers were not even aware that the store had been robbed until the police arrived later.
There were about 15 customers in the dining area and four employees in the store during the robbery, Garvey said.
He said one former employee did quit because the robbery happened on her first day of work.
Employees at the Circle K that was robbed said they were not allowed to comment on the robbery.
