Students get chance to award professors

Nomination forms are out for the Five Star Faculty Award sponsored by the Honors Center.

The award, which has been given the last 10 years, gives students the opportunity to nominate a professor they believe is outstanding.

Billie Krebs, an undeclared sophomore and member of the awards committee, started the nomination process this year because the committee does not have a faculty adviser.

Krebs said the award "is fairly prestigious" because it comes directly from the students.

Nomination forms are available through Friday in the Main Library and the Memorial and Park student unions. The committee will also have a booth on the Mall through tomorrow.

The nominated professor must be a UA faculty member and teaching this semester.

The awards committee consists of eight to 10 honors students. The committee organizes interviews and class observations of the five finalists, who will be chosen in the next couple of weeks. The final award winner will be chosen by the first week in May, Krebs said.

All runners-up and the winner receive certificates. The winner's name will be engraved on a plaque in the Memorial Student Union that lists all award winners. The winner also receives a $100 restaurant gift certificate and an honorarium check for at least $1,000, said Alice Stilwell, administrative associate for the Honors Center.

Elizabeth Harrison, professor of East Asian studies, won the award last year. Other past winners include history professor Kamakshi Murti in 1995, music professor Carrol McLaughlin in 1995 and speech professor Noel Matkin in 1993.
