Police Beat

A man was cited on several charges Tuesday after an automobile accident near the intersection of North Park Avenue and East Lowell Street.

According to university police reports, a 1979 Ford van was headed southbound on Park Avenue when it appeared to lose control and ran off the road, skidding about 65 feet into a curb and a parked 1994 Mitsubishi.

The driver, Richard E. Dilberg, 42, of Olympia, Wash., told police he did not know what happened. Dilberg said he was sleeping in the back of the van at the time of the accident, police reports stated.

Police told Dilberg witnesses saw him in the driver's seat and arrested him on a charge of providing false information to law enforcement.

At that time, police noticed a "strong odor of alcohol" coming from Dilberg's mouth as he spoke, police reports stated. Police also noticed the two passengers appeared more intoxicated then Dilberg.

Dilberg was walked to police headquarters and refused to do field sobriety tests, according to police reports.

Police reports stated that Dilberg's face was flushed, his eyes were watery and he staggered as he walked to police headquarters. Reports also stated Dilberg's moods changed from "cooperative" to "vulgar and threatening."

While searching the van, police found a small baggie of marijuana between the front seats, reports stated.

According to police reports, Dilberg told police the marijuana was not his, but later asked police to give him a break on the "weed."

Dilberg would not take an Intoxilyzer test, telling police, "Why should I give you more evidence to convict me," reports stated. Police served Dilberg with a suspension of license notice for not taking the Intoxilyzer test.

Dilberg was also arrested on charges of DUI physical control, failure to control to avoid an accident, unlawful possession of marijuana and driving without a valid license. He was booked into Pima County Jail.

A man was arrested on a DUI charge Monday near the intersection of North Mountain Avenue and East Lowell Street.

University police were patrolling westbound on East Sixth Street when they saw a Jeep CJ-5 go north on North Park Avenue across Sixth Street. Police reports stated that the Jeep failed to obey a traffic control device.

Police stopped the jeep at Mountain Avenue and Lowell Street. When police approached the driver, Jeremy J. Ginn, 23, of the 1000 block of North Wilmot Road, his eyes appeared to be very watery, red and bloodshot, police reports stated. Reports also stated that a strong odor of alcohol was coming from Ginn's breath and his face appeared flushed.

After completing sobriety tests, Ginn was arrested, police reports stated.

Ginn took Intoxilyzer tests at police headquarters and registered blood alcohol contents of 0.151 and 0.153, police reports stated.

Ginn was also cited on charges of failure to obey a traffic control device and DUI with blood alcohol content of 0.10 or more. He was released to a friend.

University police responded to a reported suicide attempt early Tuesday morning at Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St.

The resident's suitemate told university police he was in his room when he heard the shower go on for 15 to 20 minutes, which he said was an unusual amount of time for one of the suitemates to be in the shower.

The suitemate told police he did not think anything of it until he heard the toilet flush six to seven times, smelled "a lot of Lysol" being sprayed and heard a "commotion and thumps" coming from the bathroom.

According to police reports, the suitemate opened the bathroom door after knocking and found blood all over the bathroom and the student covered in blood.

The suitemate found the student's roommate and called police.

When police arrived, they found the roommate holding a cloth tourniquet over the student's left wrist.

The student was transported to University Medical Center.
