Police Beat

University police found a dead javelina and soap suds Wednesday in the fountain west of Old Main, 1200 E. University Blvd.

A male student told police he saw several people dressed in camouflage clothing in a 1990s black Ford Explorer dumping the animal into the fountain about 8:17 p.m.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department took the javelina, and Facilities Management responded to drain the fountain's water to dispose of the suds.

A female UA employee reported suspicious activity involving biohazardous equipment Wednesday at the Veterinary Sciences-Microbiology building, 1117 E. Lowell St.

The employee told university police that the "level three" biohazard vent hoods in Room 414A were disassembled in October 1996 in preparation of them being moved to the College of Medicine.

The employee told police Wednesday that on Jan. 13 at 12:30 p.m., it was discovered that two hoods had been reassembled and had been used.

According to police reports, the employee was concerned because the user had to be someone experienced with that kind of equipment.

The employee told police a soldering iron was found on the floor by one of the hoods, though no one knew what it was used for, reports stated.

Also in the room were two cardboard boxes with orange plastic biohazard bags - one holding old glassware used in centrifuges and the other containing discarded latex gloves, shoe covers and six to eight respiratory filter attachments, police reports stated.

The employee told police that some of the filters were the types used with chemical vapors and biohazardous materials such as "infectious bacteria," reports stated.

According to police reports, the employee told police she was concerned because the materials used required "extraordinary precautions" - a specialized biohazard hood and "level three" protection for the handler.

Reports also stated the employee told police adequate precautions may not have been taken to prevent the spread of biohazards outside the room.

The employee told police that anyone from the department who had a master key could enter the room.

She also told police that there are private companies who rent space in the building, reports stated.

A 13-year-old male was caught shoplifting Wednesday in the UA Associated Students Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd., police reports stated.

A male bookstore security employee told police he saw the juvenile take two ballpoint pens from the southeast corner of the bookstore's main floor. The employee told police he took the juvenile to the bookstore director's office.

The juvenile told police he did take the pens, but neither the employee nor the bookstore pressed charges.

The juvenile was released to his Booth-Fickett Middle School teacher.

A group of students from the school were on the UA Mall taking surveys Wednesday.
