What's Going On...

  • Tonight:

Classical compositional style and complex, punk-infused rock collide when a minor forest plays @ The Cellar this evening. Avant-garde in much the same spirit as Slint and Bitch Magnet, these San Franciscans employ polyrhythms, tape loops, and frenzied tempo changes, creating a dense, yet accessible sound. Locals Spillblanket and Scenic Vermont open this all-ages show.

The Pepsi-boycott might've ended, but human rights abuses still continue. "Inside Burma: Land of Fear," a free film sponsored by the Free Burma Coalition, won't be pretty. These things seldom are... 7:00 pm, Student Union Room 282.

You've gotta love a show that charges different prices for girls and boys. Taint, who seem to draw most of their inspiration from demons (which chicks love of course) headline @ Jaime's this evening, with special guests 1-Drop and The Bioflavanoids in tow. Tickets are one and two bucks and the show starts at 8:30 pm

  • Friday:

More details on this as they come in: The Rialto lost its liquor license. That's bad. But they're still booking shows, so that's good. No liquor means they can again be an all-ages venue, so kids of any level of maturity can check out the high-energy West Coast boogie of Indigo Swing @ one of Tucson's best nightspots. The Blues Kats kick off this evening of jaunty entertainment.

Another night, another excellent local band showcase @ the Cellar - this evening it's Treble Jar, the Gamera Crowns, and Spyder Rhodes' band, Snakecharmer. Who says there's nothing to do in town if you're not 21? Tickets are $3, the doors open at 8:15 pm, and you can play "Cruisin' World" between sets.

  • Saturday:

It's Downtown Saturday Night, of course, but there are far more sinister things going on in the heart of our metropolis. Something called "Shoe City Presents" is putting on some kind of performance on Pennington Ave, somewhere near the bus station. Very little is known at this point, but it seems to be related to performance art, projections, and videos.

  • Sunday:

Bust out your zoot suit! The Tucson Dance Party continues through the weekend as original gangsters Royal Crown Review bring their original mix of jump, blues, jazz, and hard swing to Club Congress. Tickets are $10.
