pacing the void

UA gymnasts travel to Ore.

After its upset of state-rival Arizona State last week, the No. 21 Arizona gymnastics team is on the road this week at the Shanico Inn-Vitational in Corvallis, Oregon.

The reason for Arizona falling from No 17 to No. 21 is that rankings are now determined by Regional Qualifying Score, which take the two best home scores, road scores and two other scores, either home or away, eliminates the highest and lowest, and averages the four middle scores.

The Wildcats (10-4, 4-1 in the Pacific 10 Conference) will face No. 8 UCLA, No. 6 Nebraska, No. 23 Denver and No. 13 Oregon State. This will be the second time this year that Arizona has faced Oregon State.

"This will be one of the tougher meets of the year for us," Gault said. "UCLA and Nebraska are having good years, whereas Oregon State has been struggling because of injuries, but we must be on tonight."

Against Oregon State, which was ranked ninth during the meet on January 31 at McKale Center, Arizona scored a season-high team score of 195.300, almost two points higher than Oregon State. The Wildcats took three out of four events, including the bars, beam and floor. The Wildcats were lead by Heidi Hornbeek, who finished first in the all-around with a score of 39.30, including a season-high 9.925 individual score on the vault.

"We cannot have any big falls like we did last week (against ASU), or UCLA and Nebraska will run right by us. We must stay on the equipment," Gault said.

Arizona will have a week off before spring break, then come back to host the Pac-10 gymnastics championships at McKale Center on Saturday, March 22 at 7:00 p.m..
