The fifth-ranked Arizona women's tennis team took advantage of the fact that two of Syracuse's players were out to win, 9-0 yesterday at the Robson Tennis Center. Although numerous unforced errors bothered her, UA head coach Becky Bell was pleased with the results. "We played very well today," Bell said. "All of the girls played focused, intense tennis and that is what got us the victory." The Orangemen (4-7) were without junior Nicole Strnadova and freshman Elizabeth Cascarilla, and their adjusted lineup struggled throughout the day. UA junior Vicky Maes beat Syracuse's Miki Kanemitsu, 6-2, 6-3 on court number one. UA sophomore Karen Goldstein struggled at first, but found her composure against Shareen Lai. Goldstein was down 2-1, but took advantage of Lai's unforced errors, to win, 6-4, 6-3. "It was weird today," Goldstein said. "I never really got going today. She (Lai) would play well, then double fault. I had a hard time getting my rhythm, so it was hard to play well." The Wildcats' (9-5, 2-4 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) biggest problem in the match was controlling their own serves. "Double faults are not common in tennis," Bell said. "We may need to work on them more in practice this week." Senior Khristen Pietrucha and sophomore Monique Allegre had no problem in their singles matches, beating Cordula Bode and Rachel Marcoccia, respectively. Each won in straight sets, only dropping one game combined. Senior Stephanie Sammaritano and freshman Anne-Laurence Bilenne completed the sweep with their wins over Anna Khv„lina and Rachel Kiley, 6-1, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-2.
