Women swimmers place 4th at NCAAs

The Arizona women's swimming team finished fourth at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis this weekend, the best finish in school history.

Trina Jackson won the 1,650 yard freestyle, the first UA woman to ever do so, with a time of 15 minutes, 59.82 seconds.

"This is the best our girls have ever done," UA head coach Frank Busch said. "I am very pleased with the performances over the last three days. This is the closest and fastest meet in history and we were up at the top the entire time."

The Wildcats' score of 351.5 was the highest in school history, helping them finish in the top 10 at the NCAA's for the seventh-consecutive year.

Southern Cal led the way with a score of 406, followed by Stanford (395), Southern Methodist (353.5), Arizona and Georgia (312).

Jackson also broke the school record in the 200 butterfly (1:57.90) in the preliminary rounds but finished sixth in the finals. Senior Ashley Tappin also set a school record in 100 freestyle (48.75).

Denali Knapp set a school record in the preliminary round of the 200 backstroke (1:57.96) and then finished seventh in the finals (1:58.30).
