Yes, they changed the name of the Union. The campus centerpiece is now known as the Memorial Student Union. An unnecessary change, perhaps, but if you're going to change its name, do it right. Call it the People's Union.
Yep, the Student Union Memorial Building recently got a name makeover and is now known as the Memorial Student Union. What was the justification for the change? Supposedly, it was done in an effort to bring consistency to the names of both campus centers, the Park Student Union and the Memorial Student Union.
Was the name change really necessary? Not really, considering that the only apparent reason for the change was to align the names of both campus Unions in perfect harmony.
The first problem with the change is that it hasn't been publicized. The union's names will never be seen as consistent when the sign outside the Memorial Student Union's front doors still reads "Student Union Memorial Building." Change the signs first, t hen go ahead with a publicity campaign .
The biggest issue with the name change, however, doesn't have to do with poor planning. No, the new name, just like the old, implies that the union is only for students. The name still does not embrace all who chose to use the facility.
If you're going to make a change, this fact must be taken into consideration. If you're going to make a change, why not go all out, go for the gusto, make a change that will show that the university is in touch with the essence of political correctness.
Instead of flipping a couple words around, call the campus centerpiece the People's Union.
The People's Union. What a nice ring. No longer will faculty, staff, visitors, alumni, and student siblings feel alienated from entering the "Student Union." All are welcome, yes, but having the building called the People's Union would convey that sentime nt. What better message could the UA send?
Calling it a "student" union doesn't embrace the homeless people that come and enjoy the spiffy new chairs while they wait out the rainy monsoon season.
We can't forget the juvenile delinquents who leave trails of graffiti as they make their way to play pool at Sam's Place and enjoy the latest in arcade entertainment.
What about UA alumni who come to the Union to check out the Fiddlee Fig lunch specials? Or what about the vegetarians who come, but find out they've been terribly mislead.
Arizona State University calls their union the Memorial Union, and the MU is its affectionate nickname. Rename UA's union the People's Union, and people would call it by its nickname, the PU.
Call the union the People's Union. Just make sure to change the signs and stationery.
