What's Going On...

Tonight:

Enter Localpalooza, a program organized by Flowing Wells High School students and local musicians to benefit the Tucson Community Foodbank. This isn't the main event, but gatùrot, Scathe, Fugue, and The Palmshavers are playing a show at The Cellar to help the needy. It's only $3 and you can check out the new Star Trek: Generations pinball game (in Louie's) between sets. The show starts at 8:00 p.m. and is co-sponsored by KAMP.

Friday:

In light of the recent murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac, as well as the recent revival of Black cinema, "The Black Culture Industry" is perhaps one of the most interesting topics of study these days. Ellis Cashmore of the UK's Staffordshore Universit y will be lecturing from noon to 1:15 p.m. on that very subject in Social Sciences room 415.

Soul Explosion '97, featuring the smooth sounds of The Commodores (minus Lionel Richie), legendary funkateers The Ohio Players, the Brothers Johnson, and Con Funk Shun happens at 7:30 p.m. in the T.C.C.

Saturday:

The main event: no, not the Final Four game, although there will be a big screen TV to watch it. Localpalooza, the aforementioned benefit, happens in full force Saturday at the TCC. Featuring live performances by Windigo, Spill Blanket, Forklift, and Nati ve Blood, there will be also be skating demos and booths. It seems to have a little bit of a metal bias, but it should be pretty rad. Admission is 2 cans of food and all proceeds benefit the Community Food Bank.

Sunday:

So, we've been accused of being unfairly biased toward the Weird Lovemakers. It's probably a charge that'll stick, but that doesn't mean they don't rock. They're playing a benefit show for The Sonora Review at Club Congress. Admission is $3 and Greyhound Soul opens.
