Police Beat

A man and a woman were arrested on multiple charges Wednesday after a UA employee saw the man trying to steal a bicycle north of the Steward Observatory Mirror Lab, 547 N. Warren Ave., police reports stated.

A male employee told university police he heard a hammering noise and saw a man, identified only as "John Doe" in police reports, hitting a bicycle and U-lock at about 5:43 a.m.

The employee told police he yelled at the man to stop and went to call police. The employee also said another employee saw the man get into the driver's seat of a white pickup truck with a female passenger and drive southbound on North Cherry Avenue towards East Sixth Street.

Police found the pickup on the sidewalk south of Navajo-Pinal-Sierra Residence Hall, 1557 E. Sixth St. An officer approached the truck and asked the man to get out.

The man refused and the officer attempted to forcibly remove the man from the vehicle with an "arm bar hold," police reports stated.

Police got the man handcuffed and in their patrol car after he kicked an officer and a burst of pepper spray was sprayed in the man's face, reports stated.

Police arrested the man on the charge of aggravated assault on a police officer.

The man was taken west of the hall, where he refused to give his name, attempted to break free, and again refused to get in the patrol car, police reports stated.

Police again sprayed pepper spray in the man's face after the man tried to kick open the patrol car's door, kicked an officer again and refused to get in the patrol car, police reports stated.

Police searched the truck and found drug paraphernalia and a knife in a backpack, police reports stated.

Police took the unidentified man to Pima County Jail on charges of aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal damage, possession of drug paraphernalia, theft and attempted theft.

The man had possession of a stolen wallet, which was given back to the owner, police reports stated. Reports stated the owner wanted to press charges.

The truck's other occupant, Melissa P. Wiley, 29, of a general delivery address, was arrested on charges of possession of a concealed weapon and disturbing the peaceful conduct of an educational institution because police alleged that she had possession of the knife. She was also booked into Pima County Jail.

A female student reported her backpack and the items in it stolen Tuesday from Sam's Place in the Memorial Student Union, 1303 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police she and her boyfriend were playing a game and she placed her backpack at her feet. When she looked down later, she found her backpack was gone.

A male student told police Wednesday that he saw a man "probably in his early 30s" that "looked kinda like a bum" take the backpack. The student said the man was white, had shoulder-length scraggly blond hair and scruffy facial hair, police reports stated.

The backpack was valued at $30. The backpack contained a leather wallet valued at $10 and $16 cash. The values of a windbreaker, keys, school papers and several identification and credit cards in the bag were unknown.

A male student reported a truck was broken into Wednesday in Lot 5065 north of Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St.

The student told university police he saw four teenage boys sitting in a beige car looking at a 1996 Ford Ranger pickup on the west end of the lot about 12:15 p.m. The student told police he was about 150 feet away from the teens.

The student told police he saw one of the teenagers try to "jimmy" the lock of the pickup. The student said he then walked to the hall and called police.

As he was talking with police, the student said he saw two teens get into the car and drive northbound on North Euclid Avenue.

Police met the student at the truck and found the passenger front window broken and a Pioneer tape deck stolen. Police then contacted the truck's owner, police reports stated.

The tape deck was valued at $165. The value of the damage was unknown.

Police recovered two sets of fingerprints from the truck.
