Omega Delta Phi honors Gutierrez

Members of the UA chapter of Omega Delta Phi fraternity presented Tucson City Manager Luis Gutierrez with the Fourth Annual Hispanic Achievement Award Saturday.

The fraternity's Gamma chapter, which has 45 active members, has been in existence since 1990.

The award is presented to a community member who has shown dedication to making a contribution to the Hispanic community of Tucson.

Rafael Noriega, president-elect of Omega Delta Phi, said Gutierrez was chosen for the award because of his dedication to the community through all of his actions.

"He had shown previous dedication to helping the Hispanic community," Noriega said.

Gutierrez accepted the award, in the form of a plaque, in front of about 200 active fraternity members, founding members, family, and friends gathered at the Marriott University Park, 880 E. Second St.

"I would like to thank all of the members of Omega Delta Phi for honoring me. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart," Gutierrez said as he accepted the award, his voice shaking. "Thank you, men of OD Phi. Keep the fire in your eyes."

A common feeling expressed by the speakers throughout the evening was that family is an important part of achieving success. Gutierrez reiterated that feeling.

"Achievement is only possible when you have a supporting family," he said. "And I have a supporting family."

In addition to recognizing Gutierrez's achievements, the members of the fraternity were also gathered to recognize individuals from their own group.

Awards were presented to fraternity members for excellence in service to the community and academic achievement, both of which the fraternity strives to achieve.

The fraternity was also honored Saturday with the presentation of the "Copper Letter" from Mayor George Miller and the city of Tucson.

The letter is presented to organizations that have shown a considerable contribution to the community, Miller said.
