U of A Today

  • The African American Studies Program presents Pamela Thomas to speak on her film "Midnight Ramble: Oscar Micheaux and the Story for Race Movies," a documentary series for the Public Broadcasting Station, in the Modern Languages Auditorium at 5 p.m. A reception for the event will be held at 4:30 at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center.

  • The men's tennis team plays the University of California at 1:30 p.m. today and the University of Stanford at noon tomorrow. Both matches are at the Robson Tennis Center.

  • Dave's Big Deluxe, with White Chrome Splendor and Beyond Seven, plays Sat., April 12 at 7 p.m. on the UA Mall. The free concert is presented by the Residence Hall Association, in conjunction with Rising Star Entertainment and KAMP Student Radio.

  • The Graduate and Professional Student Council hosts a special late night screening of "Young Frankenstein" at 12:30 a.m. (Saturday morning). Admission is free to graduate/professional students. Student ID is required. Viewers are asked to bring a can of food for the Community Food Bank.

  • The Flandrau Science Center and Planetarium presents "The Comets are Coming," an exploration into the nature and origin of comets at 7:30 p.m.

    The Laser Light Show "Psychedelic Hog" features music from the '60s and '70s at 8:30 p.m., "Lollapalaser II" features music from bands of the last five Lollapalooza tours at 9:30 p.m., "Metallica II" at 10:45 p.m. and "Pink Floyd's Darkside of the Moon" at 8:30 p.m.. General Admission is $6 and $5 for students.

  • The University Activities Board is hosting Comedy Corner in the Memorial Student Union's Cellar at noon today and 8 p.m. tomorrow. The show consists of original sketches as well as stand up and improv comedy.

  • Career Services offers a free workshop on interviewing skills from 1 p.m. until 2 p.m. in the Memorial Student Union in the Catalina Room. Students are required to check in at the Career Services reception desk in the lower level of Old Main.

  • The Memorial Student Union's Gallagher Theatre is showing "Evita" at 7:30 p.m. and 10:05 p.m. Admission is $2.50.

Fact of the Day

About 61 percent of adults say they know people who have gone to work under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More than 4 million workers in the general work force were tested for drugs in 1996 and 5.8 percent tested positive.
