Allen Arizona Daily Wildcat April 14, 1997 Police BeatA Tucson man was cited on two drug charges Thursday after university police stopped him for speeding near the intersection of East Sixth Street and North Cherry Avenue, police reports stated.Police reported they were driving on Sixth Street about 1:40 a.m. when they saw a 1986 Toyota Corolla diving east bound at a "high rate of speed." Police stopped the car at Sixth Street and Cherry Avenue. While speaking with the driver, John A. Palmer, 19, of the 100 block of South Players Club Drive, police smelled the odor of burnt marijuana coming for inside of the car, police reports stated. Palmer told police there was no marijuana in the car, police reports stated. Palmer gave police consent to search the Toyota, but before the search, police asked Palmer if he had any marijuana on him, reports stated. Palmer told police no, but that they could check if they wanted. Police searched Palmer and found a bulge in his right front pants pocket. Reports stated that Palmer removed a multicolored glass smoking pipe from the pocket. Palmer also removed a glass jar containing a "green leafy substance" from the car, according to police reports. Palmer told police he got the pipe and the jar from friends. He told police he paid $60 for the pipe. Palmer was cited on charges of possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was released at the scene.
A female student reported three parking permits missing from her car Thursday in Lot 4051, north of the Education building, 1430 E. Second St. The student told university police she parked her car in the parking lot Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. She said she was not aware the handicap parking permit, American Airlines employee parking permit and parking permit for LaGuardia International Airport in New York were missing until Wednesday at 11 a.m. The student told police she leaves her cars window down about 2 inches when she parks the vehicle. The values of permits were unknown.
A male UA Parking and Transportation Services employee reported 14 parking spaces painted by an unknown person Thursday in Lot 6090 east of La Paz Residence Hall, 602 N. Highland Ave. The employee told university police previously painted parking spaces had been painted over Wednesday about 10 a.m. When he returned to the Zone 1 lot Thursday at 6:45 a.m., the 14 parking spaces had been repainted. The 14 parking spaces included four parking spaces painted south of Hopi Residence Hall, 1440 E. Fourth St., four parking spaces west of the basketball court on the west side of Arizona Stadium, four parking spaces east of La Paz and two parking spaces east of Apache-Santa Cruz Residence Hall, 1420 E. Fifth St.
Two girls "about 15 years old" were reported missing Wednesday near McKale Center, 1721 E. Enke Drive. A Santa Rosa School dorm attendant told university police at about 9:30 p.m. that he brought two vans full of students to the Lame for a Game wheelchair basketball game at McKale Center. The attendant told police he left and thought the two girls were in the second van, but he noticed the girls were missing when the vans stopped at a gas station. The attendant told police he returned to McKale Center but could not find the girls. He said he called the school's principal, who then contacted police and the girls' parents. The attendant told police the girls may have gotten a ride from one of the girls' mothers because she was also at the game. The principal called police again at 10:58 p.m. and reported that both girls had received a ride from a cousin.
A male UA employee pulled a fire alarm after smelling natural gas Thursday in the Harshbarger Building, 1235 E. North Campus Drive. The employee told university police that he smelled natural gas near Room 108 about 3:50 p.m. and pulled the alarm to evacuate the building. Police reports stated Southwest Gas, the Tucson Fire Department and Facilities Management responded to the alarm. The fire department shut off the gas meter and checked all the rooms in the building, but the source of the smell could not be found, police reports stated. The fire department allowed re-entry into the building at 4:36 p.m. Police reports stated that the gas stayed off in the building until Friday, when Southwest Gas was expected to return for another inspection.
