UA freshman Charlie Bachtell serves during Friday's match against California. The Wildcats were defeated by both Cal and seventh-ranked Stanford over the weekend.

UA senior tennis players Tom Haugland and Roland Kupka received a healthy dose of humility this weekend.

And it wasn't pretty.

Cardinal twins Bob and Mike Bryan served and volleyed the Wildcat team into submission, winning the pro set 8-2 on Stanford's way to a 7-0 team victory on Saturday afternoon at Robson Tennis Center.

"Let me just say this - they won't be at Stanford long," said UA head coach Bill Wright on the possibility of the Bryans turning pro..

The Bryan twins, the No. 16 doubles team in the country, outplayed Arizona's upperclassmen in singles as well.

Bob Bryan handed Kupka a 6-4, 6-0 defeat in singles and Mike Bryan never let junior Jerome Oliveri get into a rhythm, winning 6-1, 6-2.

"They're (Stanford) defending national champs, so we knew if we all played great and they had an average day we could win, but they're just so stacked with talent," UA freshman Charlie Bachtell said.

Bachtell gave Arizona's strongest effort on the day. After Stanford's Grant Elliot won the first set 6-0, Bachtell rallied in the second with a 6-4 win. Elliot, as all his teammates did, prevailed in the deciding set, 6-1.

Despite the loss against seventh-ranked Stanford, Bachtell said he thinks the loss will have a positive impact on his remaining matches this season.

"After matches like this I feel a lot better, and go out on the court with a lot more confidence and probably the biggest thing in college tennis is that confidence," Bachtell said.

The Wildcats (5-12 overall, 0-9 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) suffered their ninth-consecutive loss, dropping Friday's match, 4-3 against California as well.

Cal lead 1-0 after doubles play but Arizona tied the match at three points after Haugland, Kupka and Mike Mackay's singles victories. The team decision rested on the match between UA's Jose Devercelli and Minh Lee. Lee bested the UA freshman, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3.

UA's Henrik Wagner did not play this weekend after suffering a nerve injury in his forearm. Freshman Jean-Noel Lacoste played in Friday's doubles match, but continued to sit out of singles play.

"Some of our guys couldn't play both days so we tried to get the healthiest and best lineup we had," Wright said.
