The Arizona baseball team was swept by a conference foe for the first time all season with a 13-3 loss to UCLA on Sunday in Los Angeles.

The Wildcats were swept five times in ten series' last year.

The No. 5 Bruins (32-10-1, 12-6 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) scored early and often, knocking starting left-handed pitcher Rob Shabansky (7-5) out of the game after the first inning. The No. 19 Wildcats are 29-19, 11-10 in the Six-Pac.

"We didn't pitch, we didn't hit, we didn't run and we didn't play defense," Arizona head coach Jerry Stitt said. "We didn't do the things that we needed to do."

UCLA posted three runs in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to RBI doubles by Eric Byrnes and Casey Cloud, and a fielder's choice RBI by pitcher Peter Zamora.

Byrnes finished with four hits, including two doubles, two RBI and two runs.

Zamora (3-2) went 8 2/3 innings, allowing just three runs on nine hits and three walks. He struck out two while going 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and a run scored. Zamora is riding a 17-game hitting streak.

Left fielder Jon Heinrichs hit a two run homer in the second inning off of Arizona junior reliever David Quick, Heinrichs' third home run in two games and 19th of the season. Bruin junior shortstop Troy Glaus added his 21st home run in the sixth inning. G laus and Heinrich are first and second in the Six-Pac in home runs.

The fifth inning was the only time that the Bruins did not put any runs on the board.

The Wildcats did not score their first run until the seventh inning when junior right fielder Colin Porter had an RBI single. Arizona added two more runs in the ninth.

Despite the bad weekend, Stitt said the team was upbeat.

"They are still real positive," Stitt said. "It was just one of those things, but they still seem to be up."

A bright spot for the Wildcats offensively was junior first baseman Kenny Corley, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a double, the only extra base hit by Arizona in the contest.

The Wildcats have just one more series at home starting Friday against Southern Cal. Their remaining six conference games are on the road.

Despite not having the home field advantage, Stitt said being on the road should not be a major concern for his Wildcats.

"For the most part, they have done well on the road," Stitt said. "They seem to respond well to playing on the road."
