UA rugby team falls in national playoffs

The Arizona men's club rugby team rebounded from a disappointing loss to Air Force on Saturday to defeat Indiana yesterday in the national collegiate rugby tournament.

"We played very well today," Arizona head coach Dave Sitton said. "We should be ranked somewhere in the top 12 in the nation."

The Wildcats topped the Hoosiers, 24-11 to go 1-1 in their first playoff appearance in eight years.

Despite the loss to Air Force, all was not a lost this weekend, Sitton said. He said that based on his team's performance, the Pacific Coast Collegiate Rugby Conference will most likely receive two bids in next year's tournament.

"So, it was a functional day not just for us but for the league as well," Sitton said.

In the 22-13 loss to Air Force, the Wildcats (15-3) basically beat themselves. Numerous errors, like dropping the ball on scoring opportunities, cost UA a chance at pulling off the win.

"It was a textbook case of not executing," Sitton said. "It was very disheartening to hear people say how much better we played and how we were better than Air Force."
