Men's volleyball has best showing ever at nationals

The Arizona men's club volleyball team finished better than any other previous team in UA history by finishing ninth out of 48 Division I teams in the NIRSA Collegiate Volleyball Championships over the weekend.

Sacramento State was the eventual men's Division I champion.

On Saturday, the Wildcats' offense did not show up against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the Sweet Sixteen, losing, 15-3, 15-4.

"Minnesota played their best match of tourney against us," UA assistant coach Skip Greenburgh said. "The team wasn't focused on winning and advancing, and became more frustrated and distracted from what got us to that point and we didn't stick to the game plan. Minnesota served us off the court.

"If we were focused, we could have beaten Minnesota. They came in like it was the last match of the tourney. I thought that we played well but the team was thinking that there was a tomorrow, but there wasn't."

The good news for the Wildcats is that the team does not graduate anyone for another year and Greenburgh said he feels going back to the championships is a possibility.

"This will be good experience for us for next year and will know what it takes to get to the national championships," Greenburgh said. "Everyone said that we were a year away, but this gives us more experience for next year."
