pacing the void

Women in 2nd after 1st day

Marisa Baena has grown accustomed to picking up her teammates and giving them a lift to the finish line.

It appears, though, that her teammates will provide plenty of help down the home stretch this year. Baena and the Wildcats each stand in second place after day one of the Pacific 10 Conference Championships in Tacoma, Wash.

Arizona shot an opening round 292, good enough for even-par, two strokes behind leader and defending conference champion Arizona State.

The Wildcats and Sun Devils both had all five of their golfers place among the top 22 competitors on the par-73, 6,004 yard Tacoma Country and Golf Club.

Stanford stands in third place, six shots off the pace after Cardinal Mhairi McKay fired the low round of the day, shooting a five-under-par 68, two shots better than Baena's 70.

Baena is attempting to repeat as conference champion, hoping to equal her effort from last year when she won the title on the Wildcats' home course at The Raven Golf Club at Sabino Springs.

Oregon is in fourth place at 298 followed by Southern Cal and UCLA, who are tied for fifth at 301.

Washington, California, Oregon State and Washington State round out the standings after the opening round.

The Wildcats turned in solid performances from top to bottom as no player shot worse than a 3-over-par 76.

Sophomore Krissie Register is tied for 10th at even-par 73, followed by junior Heather Graff at 74, freshman Jenna Daniels at 75, and freshman Jill Gomric at 76.

In the individual standings, Keri Cornelius of ASU is in third behind McKay and Baena, followed by six golfers tied for fourth at 1-under-par 72.

The disappointment of the day could very well be the 5-over-par 78 fired by the Bruins' top golfer, Sophie Sandolo, who was one the favorites going into the championships.

The second round of competition begins today at 9 a.m. with the Arizona and ASU squads teeing off around 11 a.m. Play concludes tomorrow with the final 18 holes of the 54 hole tournament.
