Proctor cartoon insensitive, ignorantEditor:I am writing in reference to the "Big Bag o' Happy" comic that was printed in the Daily Wildcat on Monday. Its subject matter pertained to whether or not the Pope really talks to God. He further explains that he only speaks to God when he is "whacked out of [his] head on communion wine." I must say that this struck me as extremely offensive. I, being a Catholic Christian, could not understand the humor that Josh Proctor thought he had when creating this comic. I discussed the matter with friends at the Catholic Newman Center here on campus, and asked them if I was justified in my disgust over the topic. They knew exactly what I was talking about, because they too were offended. It is one thing to poke fun at religion or a religious ceremony, but it is another to mock the Lord. You may ask what I am referring to, so I will do my best to explain. Catholic theology tells us, and my own personal beliefs tell me, that the Eucharist, or Communion as known more commonly, is the body and blood of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Some Christian denominations practice the belief that communion is a symbol, but that is not the case in the Catholic religion. Thus the depiction of the Pope being "whacked out of [his] head on communion wine" is not appropriate nor amusing. I am disappointed that the Daily Wildcat would publish such a blasphemous statement. The comic did nothing more than display the ignorance and insensitivity of the creator of the comic. I would hope that he reconsiders his humor when he next chooses such a topic to comment upon.
